David Kohn Architects (GB)
Founded in 2005, David Kohn Architects is a young agency based in London (UK). Their projects consist mainly of buildings for the arts and education, and continually emphasise sustainability and the integration of design and landscape. David Kohn was named Young Architect of the Year in 2009, and won the One off House Architect of the Year Award in 2010.
To date, David Kohn Architects has completed relatively few projects: a house in Norfolk, and a gallery in Fitzrovia, a temporary restaurant at the Royal Academy and a pavilion on the roof of the Architecture Foundation (all in London). But in spite of this, the agency is already known for – and its designs are proof of – an impressive dedication to artistic adaptability.
Kohn himself currently works as a lecturer at London Metropolitan University, having also taught at the University of Cambridge, the London School of Economics and the University of Bath. He sees teaching as a way of integrating research into new designs. For instance, Kohn’s study on theatres led to his agency being nominated in the competition to design the new Arcola Theatre in Dalston, and the Bistrotheque commission came about after his collaboration with Flack and Waddington, whom Kohn advised on restaurant design.
A-Z lectures take place on Tuesday at Zebrazaal at Z33.
Entrance is free, but registration is required.
