The Dutch graphic designer Jan van Toorn is known in particular for his posters and catalogues for the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam and the Van Abbemuseum in Eindhoven. He was responsible for the graphic design of the Dutch contribution to the Venice Biennale and spent a number of years working for PTT Nederland, the Dutch post and telecoms service. Since the 1980s, Van Toorn has primarily been active in teaching, including as a lecturer at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy and as director of the Jan van Eyck Academy in Maastricht. In 2008, 010 Publishers released Jan van Toorn: Critical practice, written by Rick Poynor as part of a series of monographs on designers.
