L’Escaut (B)
Architectural agency L’Escaut was founded in 1989 by architect Olivier Bastin and actress, scriptwriter and director Micheline Hardy. It has since grown into a collective with 15 partners. As a space for architectural, urban development and cultural productions, L’Escaut gives centre stage to the place of humankind and views on its existence, both in everyday life and in its representations. The agency’s core foundations lie in its location in the Maritiemwijk in Molenbeek as well as the communal life with artists.
L’Escaut’s integrated and interdisciplinary approach has resulted in recent projects that range from facilities (the cultural centre in Zinnik, 2009; TV Studiebureau Weinand, the new wing of the Charleroi photography museum, 2008; the Longdoz ice-skating rink, under construction; TV Studiebureau Weinand) and housing (the ‘Zwart Paard’ artists’ residences in Molenbeek, 2010; TV Atelier Gigogne) to public spaces (three public spaces in Elsene, 2010; Ursulinenplein, 2006) and scenographic designs (the Belgian pavilion at the International exhibition Zaragoza, 2008).
These projects have received high acclaim both nationally and internationally, and each in its own way has contributed something new to the existing environment.
