Brussels architect Luc Schuiten is a modern 'homo universalis', applying his design genius to possible, desirable and fantastical changes in our urban and rural environment, as well as to the relationship with our identities. His ‘vegetable cities’ are the result of a cross-pollination between architecture, botany, biomimetics, humanities, futurology and design. His work is more than an illustration of a visionary way of looking at towns and construction. Indeed it goes much further than this: Schuiten gives imaginative shape to the transition from a mechanistic way of thinking to an organic one, in which houses, buildings etc. have the ability to describe the life cycle of an organism.
