Merel van Tilburg works as an art historian at the University of Geneva. She is currently working on a dissertation entitled ‘Staging the figure: Psychology and form in symbolist theatre and painting’, and is a member of the Swiss research group ‘Art and Science’ as well as the network ‘Redefining European Symbolism’. She publishes regularly on modern and contemporary art in the Belgian art journal De Witte Raaf, in books and in exhibition catalogues. Recent articles have addressed the relationships between art and design, the political dimensions of wallpaper, 'atmosphere' in late 19th century decorative painting, the artist’s studio, and the hand of the painter.
