Star strategies + Architecture (NL)
STAR strategies + architecture was founded in Rotterdam in 2006 by Beatriz Ramo. By initiating and disseminating critical studies on relevant contemporary themes, STAR strategies + architecture has quickly built up an international reputation.
This recognition has also been boosted by the agency’s participation in numerous national and international open competitions. In the competition 'Mirador el Palmeral' in Elche, Spain, STAR strategies + architecture defeated top contenders such as the Japanese agency Sanaa, Martínez Lapeña – Torres Arquitectos and MVRDV. Elche’s palm forest is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the aim of the competition was to create a tourist attraction for the city. STAR strategies + architecture submitted a project called ‘Give me a Turn’: a Ferris wheel with 16 cabins, each with a bench seat in the middle and a 360 degree view of the palm trees.
The work of STAR strategies + architecture was also on show in the exhibition O’Mighty Green, part of the International Architecture Festival eme3 in Barcelona. For this project, the agency used Photoshop to digitally create green facades for various iconic buildings. The aim was to make a satirical comment about the architectural trend of using planted facades in order to make buildings sustainable, and to initiate a dialogue on how buildings can be sustainable without literally being green. The judges awarded a prize to the exhibition.
