In the Autumn of 2009, designer Thomas Lommée exhibits his project ‘OpenStructures’ at Z33; in this exhibition, he investigates the possibilities offered by an open-design system, which he considers paramount in the quest for sustainable and democratic forms of design. The starting points for ‘OpenStructures’ are a modular approach and open collaboration. At the heart of the system is a communal geometric grid that can be accessed by all and applied by all. The advantage of this is that designs based on this principle (from household appliances to entire houses) maintain their flexibility and compatibility, leading to a collective ‘Meccano’ in which objects are dynamic and allow adaptation to changing requirements.
